Attempts to Determine Whether the Secondary Reaction Is of Th~ Nature of an Arthus Phenomenon. By

چکیده
In the preceding paper are described the lesions which follow the inoculation of certain non-hemolyt ic streptococci into the skin of the rabbit ; such lesions begin to decrease in size af ter 24 to 48 hours bu t in over 50 per cent of animals show a recrudescence of act iv i ty about the 8 th or 9th day. This phenomenon we have te rmed the secondary reaction. I t usually fails to occur in animals which have been previously inoculated with any var ie ty of streptococcus within a period of 9 weeks. Reasons have been given for a t t r ibut ing this secondary react ion ei ther to a toxic product of the streptococci which for some reason takes a number of days to exert its action, or more probably to an ant igen-ant ibody reaction, analogous perhaps to the Arthus phenomenon.

Reactions of Rabbits to Non-hemolytic
In previous communications (1) we reported the phenomenon of secondary reaction to certain strains of green streptococci. Briefly this consists of an inflammatory reaction which appears about the 8th to 10th day after intracutaneous inoculation of rabbits with these microorganisms and at a time after the primary reaction has receded. Because we were unable to obtain the reaction in any species ...
متن کاملThe Skin Response of Rabbits to Non-hemolytic Streptococci
An attempt has been made to interpret on the lines of the Arthus phenomenon the secondary reaction which follows the intradermal inoculation of certain non-hemolytic streptococci into rabbits; but evidence in support of this interpretation of the reaction has not been obtained. The facts make it seem probable that if this secondary reaction is due to a hypersensitive state it must be one more c...
متن کاملA Review of Bush Encroachment in Namibia: From a Problem to an Opportunity?
Bush encroachment leads to land degradation in semiarid to arid regions. Over 45 million hectares of agricultural land in Namibia are affected. This is worrisome as nearly 70% of the Namibian population depends on agricultural activities and the beef industry is the mainstay of the farming communities. This study employed secondary data sources to provide a review of the problems and benefits o...
متن کاملPluralism; an Old but New Phenomenon in Socio-political Processes
This paper presents pluralism as a historical process. The term pluralism frequently appears not only in the field of political philosophy but also in social sciences. In one sense, the growing literature is stimulating and enriching, nevertheless the abundance of material attempting to explain the various interpretations of pluralist theory can be convoluted and overwhelming. Despite the const...
متن کاملSimilarities in the Mechanisms Determining the Arthus and Shwartzman Phenomena
The intradermal injection of ovalbumin in rabbits sensitized to this antigen, under circumstances resulting in the elicitation of the Arthus phenomenon, causes a systemic reaction involving alterations in leucocytes and platelets, and results in cellular thrombosis of capillaries and veins in the injected skin areas. An abnormal metabolic process develops in the injected skin areas and may be t...
